Whereas most frames up until this time-period were completely carved from wood, the Empire-style introduced frames made from pâte (a mixture of bone glue, paper, and chalk pressed into moulds). This technique was faster for production than woodcarving, and time was of essence because Napoleon ordered the re-framing of all the paintings in the Louvre in the Empire style.
